A Message from Attorney General Lisa Madigan
The holiday shopping season is now in full swing. Every year at this time,
I encourage parents, grandparents, caregivers and anyone buying gifts for
children to take time to review our annual Safe Shopping Guide that details
dangerous children’s toys and products that were recalled in 2016.
I have issued this annual guide since 2007, when a startling 44 million units
of children’s products were recalled and it was nearly impossible to keep
up. This guide helps Illinois families learn what dangerous products have
been recalled over the past year, so that they can remove them from their homes. Since January, there
were 41 recalls issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and this guide including
descriptions and photographs of toys, cribs and furniture, children’s clothing and other children’s
products.
This year, families need to watch out for recalls of baby rattles and bath toys that break apart and pose
a choking hazard, toy planes and cars that children can choke on, crayon boxes that contain pieces of
glass, toys and water bottles that contain unsafe levels of lead paint, and many other items.
As you embark on the holiday season, I urge you to read through this guide to ensure that you do not
have dangerous recalled products in your home. Just as important, keep in mind that recalled items
may be for sale at yard and garage sales, and secondhand websites such as Craigslist and eBay. It’s
important to take time and take appropriate precautions when purchasing new toys and products for
children so you can help your family and friends have a safe holiday season and new year.
If you have any questions about products included the guide, please call the Attorney General’s
Product Recall Hotline at 1-888-414-7678 (TTY: 1-800-964-3013). Current and previous editions of
the Safe Shopping Guide can be found at http://www.ag.state.il.us/consumers/safe_shopping.html.
Have a happy and safe holiday season!
Lisa Madigan
